While automation has long been integral to changes in technology, industry and society, the past few years have seen a surge of interest in how digital automation is going to transform the nature of labour in the 21st century. While automation in the 20th century was associated with machines conducting routine and repetitive mechanical tasks, advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning have led to predictions that soon many ‘creative’, decision making processes will soon largely be automated. At the same time, however, contemporary creative work is heavily reliant upon digital technologies of automation for the production of video, photography, music and games.
Automating Creativity explores how workers in the creative industries and academics who study technology and culture understand the existing and emerging relationships between automation and creativity, and how these relationships inform contemporary communication, media and culture
